Who is Woodward Candle Co.?
Located in Temple, Texas, Woodward Candle Co. is the epitome of a small business. It's just Leah and me. From creating the candles to marketing and shipping, it's a two-person show. You can rest assured each product you purchase is made and shipped with special attention and care. Each sale is important and special to us.
After 15+ years in education, I decided it was time for a change and had the idea to create custom, hand-poured soy candles. Leah is right there with me, learning the craft, while still maintaining a full-time job as a Child Life Specialist at McLane Children's Hospital.
We have six children, three human and three canine. Madison, Cole, and Logan are all grown up and enjoying adulthood. Major, Owen, and Lorenzo keep the house in order, enjoying relaxing around the house. Lorenzo actually works with Leah at McLane Children's as a facility dog.

Do you take custom orders?
Short answer: ABSOLUTELY! Celebrate every occasion with a custom, handcrafted candle. From birthdays to weddings and anniversaries, nothing says how much you care like a one-of-a-kind candle.
Why is it important to trim a candle's wick after each burn?
- For a cleaner burn: A long wick can cause the flame to be too large. This large flame can lead to soot and smoke, which can stain your walls and belongings and pollute the air. Trimming the wick to around ¼ inch helps the candle burn cleaner and reduces the amount of soot produced.
- For an even burn: A long wick can also cause the candle to burn unevenly. This is because the larger flame melts more wax on the outside of the candle, creating a tunnel around the wick. Trimming the wick helps the wax melt evenly across the surface of the candle, which extends the life of your candle.
How does a candle work? And why is carbon buildup a problem?
The Flame and the Fuel:
- A candle flame thrives by drawing melted wax up the wick. This melted wax is fueled by the heat from the flame itself, in a continuous cycle.
The Wick's Role:
- The wick is essentially a tiny highway for the melted wax. It needs to be the right size for the candle to function properly.
- An ideal wick allows enough melted wax to reach the flame for a steady burn, but not so much that it creates a huge flame.
Carbon Buildup: The Hitch in the Ride
- As the wax burns, it doesn't completely disappear. A small amount of leftover material, called carbon byproduct, accumulates on the wick.
- This buildup is what you see as the black "mushroom" on the wick tip.
The Trouble with Too Much Carbon Buildup:
- A large carbon buildup acts like a clog on the wick highway. It restricts the flow of melted wax, making it harder for the flame to get the fuel it needs.
Trimming the Wick: A Preventative Measure
- Regularly trimming the wick to ¼ inch before each burn helps prevent this carbon buildup.
- A clean wick allows for optimal wax flow, resulting in a cleaner burning candle, free of excess smoke and soot, and with an even melt pool across the candle's surface.
